Manual Lymphatic Drainage Massage (MLD), also known as Oncology Massage was developed in the 1930’s and has been used as a very delicate form of massage which stimulates the body’s Lymphatic System. This improves the body’s metabolism, helps the body to eliminate waste and improve the Immune System.
How does it work?
The lymphatic system is responsible for helping fluid and waste leave the body and regulate the immune system. When the lymphatic system becomes blocked fluid builds up and stagnates, causing the entire system to become toxic, making us feel sluggish and more susceptible to viral or contagious diseases.
By stimulating the lymphatic system through light pressure it works more efficiently and in turn boosts the immune system, clears blockages, eliminates toxins and transports nutrients to cells.
How is it performed?
MLD is essentially a very light form of massage carried out only by specialist practitioners who have received specific training. It is performed with the client fully clothed and should last for one hour.
What is it used for?
MLD is especially useful for individuals who seem to suffer regularly from common illnesses like colds and flu. It is also recommended for people who live sedentary lifestyles or for those who want to reduce puffiness/ water retention or swelling. It has been cited as having a positive effect on problematic skin, cellulite, dysfunctional respiratory systems and for those who suffer with low energy.
Manual Lymphatic Drainage is a very powerful but light treatment.
Links to Oncology
Many types of massage cannot be given to people who have developed cancer. However, Oncology massage is an adaption of normal massage offering cleansing, relaxing, pain-relieving and immunological benefits. Our lead Massage Therapist Jo Sturgess has detailed knowledge and understanding of the safe protocols for treatment for each stage of cancer, pre and post-surgical protocols, chemotherapy and radiation protocols, lymphedema protocols and scar tissue protocols.
Whilst there are still some contraindications for Oncology massage, it can offer a safe route to a hands-on healing therapy for many people when standard massage is contraindicated. Before commencing oncology massage, a referral / permission from your oncology consultant must be obtained.
